Gerrit M. Grosse, MD, PhD, University Hospital Basel, Basel, Switzerland, discusses the importance of identifying biomarkers that can be therapeutically targeted for the treatment of stroke, and highlights the role of causal inference methods in distinguishing between predictive and mediating biomarkers. Dr Grosse notes that emerging biomarkers, including imaging and blood biomarkers, show promise in assessing the vulnerability of atherosclerotic plaques and predicting vascular events, and that targeting inflammatory pathways may be a viable therapeutic strategy. This interview took place at the 18th World Stroke Congress (WSC) in Seoul, Korea.
