Giorgio Busto, MD, Careggi University Hospital, Florence, Italy, discusses the granular hypoperfusion intensity ratio, a novel perfusion metric that assesses infarct growth rate in patients with acute ischemic stroke through a weighted assessment of hypoperfusion lesion volumes. Dr Busto explains that ischemic tissue is highly heterogeneous, and that this metric could help guide transfer between stroke centers, selection for neuroprotective drugs, and risk stratification. He highlights that future work will assess its ability to predict hemorrhagic transformation, refine patient selection in distal medium vessel occlusion, and improve prognostication in patients with large core infarcts. This interview took place at the 18th World Stroke Congress (WSC) in Seoul, Korea.
