IHC 2023 | Treatment challenges and potential for cluster headaches

Andrea Carmine Belin, PhD, Karolinska Institutet, Solna, Sweden, discusses the challenges in treating cluster headaches. Although cluster headaches have been known since the 17th century, there is currently no specific treatment developed for them. The existing treatments rely on medications intended for migraine relief, such as triptans and lithium (used for bipolar disorder). Additionally, treating high blood pressure has shown some therapeutic benefits. However, there is a need to develop treatments specifically tailored for cluster headaches to minimize side effects. It is worth noting that not all patients respond well to these treatments, with only 75% experiencing positive outcomes with triptans. This interview took place at the International Headache Congress (IHC) 2023 in Seoul, Korea.
