IHC 2023 | Genetic factors in cluster headache: insights and findings

Andrea Carmine Belin, PhD, Karolinska Institutet, Solna, Sweden, discusses the role of genetics in cluster headache, a condition that has historically not been considered a genetic disorder like migraine. However, research has shown that a significant percentage of cluster headache patients have close relatives who also suffer from the condition. Dr Carmine Belin provides an overview of the different genetic studies conducted on cluster headache, including linkage studies, candidate gene studies, and genome-wide association studies, highlighting the formation of the International Consortium for Cluster Headache Genetics, which has conducted genome-wide association studies on European cohorts. Interestingly, these studies have revealed strong genetic linkages to specific regions on chromosomes 2 and 6. This interview took place at the International Headache Congress (IHC) 2023 in Seoul, Korea.
