IHC 2023 | Sleep patterns in patients with cluster headache

Andrea Carmine Belin, PhD, Karolinska Institutet, Solna, Sweden, discusses a study that compared the sleep patterns of patients with cluster headaches, including both episodic and chronic cases, to a control group. The researchers used actigraphy units and sleep questionnaires to collect data over a two-week period. The results showed that cluster headache patients, especially those with chronic cluster headaches, had poorer sleep quality compared to the healthy controls. Interestingly, even during remission periods, cluster headache patients still experienced decreased sleep quality. The study also examined the use of triptans in cluster headache patients and found that those who didn’t use triptans reported higher frequency of autonomic symptoms and claimed that alcohol didn’t trigger their attacks as frequently. Additionally, the patients who used triptans smoked less than those who didn’t. These findings suggest that different clinical characteristics may be associated with the use of triptans in cluster headache patients. This interview took place at the International Headache Congress (IHC) 2023 in Seoul, Korea.
