Apostolos Safouris, MD, PhD, Athens Metropolitan Hospital, Athens, Greece, discusses the importance of minimizing pre-hospital delays in stroke care, emphasizing that collaboration between EMS providers and hospital-based stroke teams is vital. He comments on the drip-and-ship model for patients with suspected large vessel occlusions, in which treatment with intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) is initiated in a community hospital, before the patient is returned to the ambulance for transfer to a comprehensive stroke center. Dr Safouris expresses hope that administering tenecteplase in place of alteplase will speed up patient transfers and improve outcomes after stroke. This interview took place at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference in Basel, Switzerland.
