BNA 2023 | Exploring the significance of alpha-synuclein post-translational modifications

Tiago Outeiro, PhD, from the University Medical Center Göttingen in Germany, emphasizes the significance of mapping post-translational modifications (PTMs) of alpha-synuclein (α-syn). PTMs refer to chemical alterations that affect different aspects of the protein, including its folding, localization, and functions. Prof. Outeiro believes that understanding α-syn PTMs is crucial, and he is encouraged by the recent initiative by the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which called for groups to quantify PTMs of α-syn in human brain tissue. PTMs could serve as indicators of biological changes associated with disease. By gaining a comprehensive understanding of these modifications, researchers may be able to develop therapeutic strategies aimed at modifying specific PTMs and, therefore, α-syn pathology. This interview took place at The BNA 2023 International Festival of Neuroscience in Brighton, UK.
