Jinsy Andrews, MD, FAAN, from Columbia University, New York, NY, discusses biomarker candidates in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research. Neurofilaments are a key focus in ALS research. The light chain isoform (NfL) is known to be associated with disease progression and was evaluated during the assessment of tofersen, forming the basis of its recent approval. Neurofilament isoforms and their correlation with clinical outcomes continue to be investigated. Dr Andrews also mentions other potential biomarkers, such as inflammatory markers and urine p75, and outlines the progress made in creating a centralized biorepository for samples made possible by the recent ‘Act for ALS’ legislation. This collection of data from both symptomatic individuals and those at risk of ALS is a promising step towards validating new ALS biomarkers. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Denver, CO.
