MDS 2023 | Implementing advances in the diagnosis and treatment of movement disorders across the globe

Francisco Cardoso, MD, PhD, FAAN, The Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, discusses the growth and evolving mission of the Movement Disorder Society (MDS) from primarily focusing on education to now being involved in scientific projects. The MDS is working towards improving access to care through two approaches. The first is by increasing awareness about movement disorders and their treatments. The second approach involves partnering with other organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), to create sustainable mechanisms for accessing different modalities of diagnosis and treatment globally. Prof. Cardoso highlights a recent meeting with WHO representatives to develop a concrete strategy for improving access to care on multiple continents. This interview took place at the 2023 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Copenhagen, Denmark.
