Sleep Europe 2026 | Tailoring CSA treatment in practice: early re-evaluation and patient acceptance

Winfried Randerath, MD, PhD, Bethanien Hospital, University of Cologne, Solingen, Germany, discusses factors guiding treatment decisions in patients with central sleep apnea (CSA). Prof. Randerath explains that treatment should begin with an easy option expected to be effective, such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), with patients re-evaluated within days to weeks and switched promptly if breathing disturbances and symptoms do not improve. He also highlights that acceptance of the mask can be an issue, and that simpler options such as oxygen may be suitable for some patients. This interview took place at Sleep Europe 2026 in Maastricht, the Netherlands.
