ECTRIMS 2023 | Understanding disease progression in MS: challenges & opportunities

Timothy Coetzee, PhD, National MS Society, New York, NY, discusses the challenges associated with identifying and understanding disease progression in multiple sclerosis (MS). Dr Coetzee emphasizes the importance of tools and clinical manifestations in monitoring progression and highlights the emerging concepts of progression independence of relapse activity. There is a need for biomarkers and imaging modalities to monitor progression in individual patients during their day-to-day treatment. Importantly, there is a growing understanding of the underlying mechanisms of progression and the potential for new treatments. Dr Coetzee also highlights the significance of early detection of progression, factors influencing progression, and the patient perspective in managing the disease. This interview took place at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) Congress 2023 in Milan, Italy.
