EAN 2023 | Highlights and breaking news in sleep disorders

Ambra Stefani, MD, PhD, Medical University of Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria, shares the sleep disorders highlights and breaking news presented in the closing plenary during the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) 2023 Congress. The field of sleep medicine has seen tremendous growth and development over the last few years, resulting in a plethora of new studies and discussions. One of the current hot topics in the field is the relationship between sleep and neurodegenerative disease, with researchers looking at how changes in sleep architecture can increase the risk of long-term neurodegeneration. The connection between sleep apnea and neurological conditions such as stroke and Parkinson’s disease is also being investigated. In the space of basic science, research is focused on better understanding the role of adenosine in insomnia and the role of melanin-concentrating hormone in narcolepsy and cataplexy. This interview took place at the EAN 2023 Congress in Budapest, Hungary.
