MDS 2023 | Palliative care for movement disorders: a holistic approach

Victor McConvey, RN, MACN, Parkinson’s Victoria, Victoria, Australia, discusses the importance of palliative care for individuals with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. With a projected increase in the number of people living with these conditions globally, there is a crucial need to improve their overall quality of life, including end-of-life care. Palliative care for movement disorders should be multidisciplinary, involving not only physicians and palliative care teams but also healthcare professionals from acute neurology, rehabilitation medicine, and other areas. There is a common misconception that palliative care is solely focused on end-of-life, but it is a holistic and collaborative approach that addresses patient needs throughout the continuum of illness. This interview took place at the 2023 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Copenhagen, Denmark.
