MDS 2023 | Exploring palliative care for movement disorders

Victor McConvey, RN, MACN, Parkinson’s Victoria, Victoria, Australia, discusses the relatively new field of palliative care for people with movement disorders, which requires a different model of palliative care that is longer in duration, more complex, and requires multidisciplinary input. Globally, there is a shortfall in accessing palliative care services, particularly for those with movement disorders, and a significant gap identified by the World Health Organization and the Neuropalliative Care Association. While there are pockets of excellence in palliative care for movement disorders, there are also areas with no availability of such services. Various initiatives have been developed to educate healthcare professionals on delivering palliative care. This interview took place at the 2023 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Copenhagen, Denmark.
