AAN 2022 | Identifying the risk factors for parasomnias

Alberto Ramos, MD, FAAN, University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL, discusses the most significant risk factors for parasomnias and their associations with other conditions. For REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), the leading risk factors appear to be age and the association with α-synucleinopathies. Additionally, people with narcolepsy are at higher risk of developing RBD due to the quick transitions between REM sleep and wakefulness characteristic of narcolepsy. Certain medications can also cause but mostly exacerbate RBD. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology 2022 Congress in Seattle, WA.
