AAN 2023 | SOL-INCA MRI study: sleep duration and brain MRI biomarkers

Alberto Ramos, MD, FAAN, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL, explores the SOL-INCA-MRI study, an ancillary study of the Hispanic Community Health Study. The study aimed to assess brain health and sleep issues in the Hispanic community, specifically focusing on older adults. The study obtained neuroimaging data through MRI scans from over 2,800 participants, identifying markers associated with poor brain health and dementia risk. The data presented revealed that longer sleep duration was associated with lower brain volumes and increased white matter hyperintensities, particularly in older adults and individuals with sleep apnea. These findings highlight the importance of considering sleep duration and sleep apnea as factors that may impact brain health in vulnerable populations. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting 2023 in Boston, MA.
