ESOC 2024 | Managing hypertension to prevent the progression of covert small vessel disease

Raffaele Ornello, MD, University of L’Aquila L’Aquila, Italy, emphasizes the importance of controlling arterial hypertension to prevent the progression of covert cerebral small vessel disease. He highlights strong evidence supporting aggressive management of hypertension for this purpose. Dr Ornello also mentions that there is less evidence for the use of antithrombotic drugs, noting the need to differentiate between covert small vessel disease and covert brain infarctions. In cases of prior brain infarction, antithrombotic treatment may be justified, but further research is required to clarify the best treatment approach for these patients. This interview took place at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2024 in Basel, Switzerland.
