ESOC 2024 | Covert small vessel disease and cognitive decline

Raffaele Ornello, MD, University of L’Aquila, L’Aquila, Italy, discusses the correlation between the progression of covert small vessel disease (SVD) and future risk of stroke/cognitive decline, noting that while there is substantial evidence linking the two, aggressive pharmacological treatments are not recommended due to the lack of strong evidence supporting their efficacy. He suggests that controlling vascular risk factors may be more effective than using anti-dementia drugs. Dr Ornello emphasizes the importance of collaboration among clinicians, radiologists, and basic scientists to advance understanding and develop targeted therapies for cognitive decline related to SVD. This interview took place at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2024 in Basel, Switzerland.
