Apostolos Safouris, MD, PhD, from Athens Metropolitan Hospital, Athens, Greece, discusses his recent umbrella review of systematic reviews (SRs) evaluating endovascular treatment (EVT) versus best medical management for large-vessel occlusion acute ischemic stroke. Using SR data from 2015 onwards, encompassing 24 randomized controlled trials, the findings indicate a clear mortality benefit and increase in good/excellent functional outcomes from mechanical thrombectomy treatment in large vessel occlusions. Dr Safouris states that without EVT, two-thirds of stroke patients are severely disabled or die within three months. With EVT, this outcome applies to less than half of the patients, demonstrating significant benefits of EVT. This interview took place at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference in Basel, Switzerland.
