EAN 2023 | Heritable small vessel diseases: registries and data sharing to define clinical features

Anna Bersano, MD, PhD, IRCCS Carlo Besta Neurological Institute Foundation, Milan, Italy, explores the intricate field of heritable small vessel diseases. Heritable small vessel diseases are complex because of the vast range of clinical and neurological phenotypes associated with this disease, including lacunar stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, white matter hyperintensities, and microbleeds. Dr Bersano emphasizes the importance of diagnosing rare monogenic disorders, as it enables specific management strategies and targeted therapies when available. However, due to the rarity of these conditions, collaborative efforts and registries are crucial for gathering data, understanding pathogenesis, determining clinical features, and implementing clinical trials. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) 2023 Congress in Budapest, Hungary.
