WSC 2023 | Revolutionizing stroke prevention: the PreventS-MD web app

Balakrishnan Nair, MPH, PhD, National Institute for Stroke and Applied Neurosciences, Auckland University of Technology Auckland, New Zealand, provides details about the PreventS-MD webapp, a clinical software for stroke prevention. This user-friendly software assesses stroke risk through clinically tested questions and then offers tailored, evidence-based recommendations which clinicians can further adjust if necessary. This information can then be easily transferred to the user’s phone via a QR code, ensuring access at home. It also has the potential to provide valuable insights on population-based strategies to policymakers. PreventS-MD has received a high usability score, with attributes such as timesaving, ease of use, and adaptability. This globally accessible web app caters to 5.5 billion people in 149 countries. Studies suggest that in 5 years, it could potentially reduce stroke incidence by 20%, preventing 300 million stroke-related deaths. Additionally, it shows promise in reducing other non-communicable diseases like cancer and heart disease. This interview took place at the World Stroke Congress (WSC) 2023 in Toronto, Canada.
