AAN 2023 | Health disparities in MS: experiences and perspectives of patients

Mitzi Joi Williams, MD, Joi Life Wellness Group, Smyrna, GA, shares the findings of a survey on diagnostic delay and treatment patterns among patients of different ethnicities. The study revealed that patients of color experienced more frequent misdiagnoses compared to white patients. However, there was no significant difference in terms of access to disease-modifying therapy, with patients of color being more likely to receive high-efficacy therapy. Interestingly, the majority of patients, regardless of ethnicity, expressed interest in participating in clinical research, highlighting the importance of addressing the barriers to enrollment. Dr Williams emphasizes the need for larger-scale studies to gain further insights into multiple sclerosis (MS) among diverse populations. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting 2023 in Boston, MA.
