AAN 2025 | A clinical score to predict epilepsy after cerebral venous thrombosis

Erik Lindgren, MD, PhD, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA, comments on the development of a clinical risk score to predict epilepsy after cerebral venous thrombosis. He mentions the DIAS score, which has been validated in multiple patient cohorts and shows promise for predicting epilepsy risk based on clinically available factors. This interview took place at the 77th American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA.

Yes, so this was a large collaborative study of patients with cerebral venous thrombosis and we developed a clinical risk score to predict epilepsy after cerebral venous thrombosis based on previous literature that has been done in our group and we found risk factors that we compiled into the DIAS score it is freely available online which we validated internally and developed in 1,000 patients and then externally validated that in two other patient cohorts one from Israel and one from the US, the AstroCVT patient cohort and the ActionCVT patient cohort, and we found a similar result...

Yes, so this was a large collaborative study of patients with cerebral venous thrombosis and we developed a clinical risk score to predict epilepsy after cerebral venous thrombosis based on previous literature that has been done in our group and we found risk factors that we compiled into the DIAS score it is freely available online which we validated internally and developed in 1,000 patients and then externally validated that in two other patient cohorts one from Israel and one from the US, the AstroCVT patient cohort and the ActionCVT patient cohort, and we found a similar result. So we actually think that we can use this score based on clinically available factors that we do measure and get information on in our clinical routine to predict epilepsy after cerebral venous thrombosis.
