MDS 2023 | Personalized medicine in movement disorders

Prashanth Kukkle, PhD, Center for Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Clinic Vikram Hospitals, Bangalore, India, highlights the importance of personalized medicine in the treatment of movement disorders. Not every patient with a movement disorder, such as Parkinson’s disease, experiences the same symptoms. Therefore, a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment is no longer effective. Dr Kukkle discusses the emerging field of pharmacogenomics and personalized therapy, which takes into account individual variations in response to medication. By understanding a patient’s specific genetic makeup and potential mutations, healthcare professionals can determine the most suitable dosage and treatment for each individual. This approach aims to improve patient outcomes and reduce side effects. This interview took place at the 2023 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Copenhagen, Denmark.
