AAN 2023 | Characteristics and differential diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia from its mimics

Marcela Romero-Reyes, DDS, PhD, University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Baltimore, MD, discusses the importance of understanding the characteristics of facial pain to aid in differentiating trigeminal neuralgia from its mimics. The episodic electric nature of some facial pain conditions, as well as the absence of a refractory period and association with function in temporomandibular disorders, are important factors to consider. There is also the possibility of facial pain being a symptom of other conditions, including autonomic disorders or primary headache disorders like migraine. Dr Romero-Reyes emphasizes the need for collaboration between healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive and accurate diagnoses. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting 2023 in Boston, MA.
