ISC 2024 | Enhanced benefits of the AHA Life’s Essential 8 in APOE 4 carriers

Santiago Clocchiatti-Tuozzo, MD, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, shares his work investigating the impact of APOEε4 carrier status on the benefits of adhering to the American Heart Association’s Life’s Essential 8 (LE8) guidelines in reducing cardiovascular disease risk. Using UK Biobank data, they analyzed 317,174 participants, finding that APOEε4 carriers experienced an 11% greater reduction in stroke, transient ischemic attack, or myocardial infarction risk with LE8 optimization compared to non-carriers. Among all participants, each 1 SD increase in LE8 score correlated with a 28% risk reduction for these events. A significant interaction between APOEε4 status and LE8 score was observed, indicating enhanced benefits for carriers. These findings underscore the importance of educating APOE ε4 carriers, particularly middle-aged individuals without prior vascular events, about strategies for improving long-term neuro- and cardiovascular health. This interview took place during the International Stroke Conference 2024 in Phoenix, AZ.
