WSC 2026 | Mechanical thrombectomy access: expanding eligibility, aging population and training neurologists

Adnan Mujanovic, MD, PhD, Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, Bern, Switzerland, discusses barriers to accessing mechanical thrombectomy, a multifaceted issue involving many stakeholders and policymakers. Dr Mujanovic explains that the number of eligible patients is rising with expanding indications and an aging population, but the increase in neurointerventionalists has not been enough to bridge this gap. He suggests that the most pragmatic and cost-effective route may be to give neurologists additional neurointerventional training. This interview took place at the 18th World Stroke Congress (WSC) in Seoul, Korea.
