Nirmeen Kishk, MD, Kasr Alainy Hospital, Cairo University, Cairo, Egypt, discusses the current status of drug resistant epilepsy management in resource-limited countries. There are two main issues which need to be improved: lack of knowledge amongst doctors, patients and their families and limited facilities. Prof. Kishk highlights efforts to tackle the epilepsy treatment gap via the establishment of specialized tertiary services. In Cairo, a specialized epilepsy unit been formed which run clinics for patients who may have drug resistant epilepsy. Patients are typically reevaluated by history taking and electroencephalography. The condition can then be managed in several ways including surgically, pharmacologically, or with non-pharmacological treatments. Promotion of tertiary referral clinics like these on social media and during conferences further raises awareness in patients and providers. This interview took place at the International Epilepsy Congress 2023 in Dublin, Ireland.
