Reetta Kälviäinen, MD, PhD, University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio University Hospital, Kuopio, Finland, discusses the topic of palliative care in severe epileptic conditions. She emphasizes the clear need for additional education and discussion about palliative care for epilepsy. The approach to epilepsy management over time should not be dichotomous, instead symptomatic treatment needs to be integrated with the active treatment in more progressed stages of the disease. A lack of prognostic biomarkers has led to challenges in determining when, and in whom, palliative care options should be discussed. There is a need for novel, multimodal prognostication that incorporates biomarkers and genetic tools. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
