ISC 2025 | Understanding the re-canalization paradox in vertebrobasilar occlusions

Mohamed Doheim, MD, The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), Pittsburgh, PA, comments on the challenges of managing patients with vertebrobasilar occlusion, highlighting the “re-canalization paradox” where successful re-canalization is not always associated with good functional outcomes. Dr Doheim speaks about a multivariable logistic regression model, including variables such as hyperglycemia, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS), and age, to predict poor functional outcomes despite successful re-canalization. This interview took place at the 2025 International Stroke Conference (ISC), held in Los Angeles, CA.
