WSC 2023 | Advancements in cell-based therapies for stroke care

Sean I. Savitz, MD, Institute for Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases at UTHealth Houston, Houston, TX, explores the evolution of cell-based therapies in stroke care. This field has progressed substantially in recent years, with numerous clinical trials now underway. One major question being addressed in these studies is which patients would benefit most from these therapies. Key developments include the safe administration of bone marrow-derived cells in an allogenic approach and preclinical work supporting the use of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) to aid patient recovery following reperfusion therapy. These innovations promise a new frontier in stroke care. This interview took place at the World Stroke Congress (WSC) 2023 in Toronto, Canada.
