EEC 2024 | Responsive neuromodulation for epilepsy: reducing exposition time to stimulation

Andreas Schulze-Bonhage, MD, PhD, Epilepsy Center, University Hospital Freiburg, Freiburg, Germany, discusses the concept of responsive neuromodulation for epilepsy, focusing on the NeuroPace system, which is implanted intracranially to detect seizure-related patterns in electroencephalogram (EEG) activity and provide targeted stimulation. While this system has shown limited success in halting seizures directly, its effectiveness primarily comes from gradual neuromodulation, reducing overall brain exposure to stimulation compared to other techniques. This interview took place at the 15th European Epilepsy Congress (EEC) 2024 in Rome, Italy.
