Sleep Europe 2024 | Impact of hormonal changes on sleep apnea prevalence in women

Clete Kushida, MD, PhD, Stanford University Medical Center, Redwood City, CA, discusses the relationship between hormonal changes and sleep apnea prevalence in women. Men generally exhibit a higher prevalence of sleep apnea compared to women, but prevalence in women after menopause rises to levels comparable to men, due to the decline in estrogen and progesterone. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can mitigate this effect, reducing sleep apnea prevalence in postmenopausal women back to premenopausal levels. This interview took place at the Sleep Europe 2024 congress in Seville, Spain.
