Sleep Europe 2024 | Types of consumer sleep monitoring devices and their role in improving the diagnosis of sleep apnea

Clete Kushida, MD, PhD, Stanford University Medical Center, Redwood City, CA, discusses the three primary categories of sleep monitoring devices: wearable, nearable (placed under the mattress or by the bedside), and airable, which use sound or radar to detect sleep and breathing patterns. He highlights the rapid growth in sleep and breathing detection technology and the increasing use of consumer devices for sleep apnea assessment. Dr Kushida hopes that the widespread application of these technologies will improve the diagnosis of sleep apnea, as most cases still go untreated. This interview took place at the Sleep Europe 2024 congress in Seville, Spain.
