AAN 2024 | Updates on craniotomy techniques in hemorrhagic stroke

Jason Davies, MD, PhD, State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY, discusses how recent advances have informed approaches to craniotomy in hemorrhagic stroke. Small craniotomies (2-3cm) using tubular retractors are now preferred. Surgiscope systems have also been developed to manage bleeding and prevent clot reaccumulation. Dr Davies also emphasizes the rise in minimally invasive approaches to craniotomy when the long axis is most beneficial to excise hematomas, with surgeons increasingly opting for eyebrow or eyelid incisions to enhance patient satisfaction.
