ESOC 2024 | The future of EVT treatment in stroke: dual-SR, tandem occlusions, and low ASPECTS

Wim H. van Zwam, MD, from Maastricht University Medical Center, Maastricht, Netherlands, provides an overview of the current research landscape of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). He emphasizes the need for more studies investigating the optimal thrombectomy technique in different circumstances. One such study, the TWIN2WIN trial (NCT05632458), assessed the efficacy and safety of a simultaneous dual stent approach versus the single stent retriever approach. The findings, presented at ESOC 2024, demonstrated improved recanalization rates in the double stent group compared to the single stent group. Other important topics currently under investigation in clinical trials include the optimal management of tandem occlusions and defining subgroups of patients with low ASPECTS that are most likely to benefit from EVT. This interview was conducted at the 10th European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC) 2024 in Basel, Switzerland.
