CONy 2022 | The role of carotid ultrasound in carotid artery stenosis

Laszlo Csiba, MD, PhD, DSci, University of Debrecen, Debrecen, Hungary, discusses the utility of carotid ultrasound in managing carotid artery stenosis. For patients with a mild ischaemic stoke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), a endarterectomy or stent should take place two weeks after the attack. Whilst computed tomography (CT) angiography can reveal the level of calcification of the plaque, carotid ultrasound can show the plaque structure and density. Dr Csbia additionally gives his perspectives on how ultrasounds can inform clinicians on whether to perform a endarterectomy or stent, as well as the value of the grayscale median in decision making. This interview was conducted during the 2022 World Congress on Controversies in Neurology (CONy) meeting.
