EAN 2023 | The diverse effects of antiseizure medications on sleep disorders

Samson Khachatryan, MD, PhD, National Institute of Health of Armenia, Yerevan, Armenia, explains the diversity of antiseizure medications and their varied effects on sleep disorders. Antiseizure medications have distinct mechanisms of action, and some can impact sleep disorders positively or negatively. For instance, benzodiazepines used in epilepsy can exacerbate sleep apnea symptoms, while some drugs can be beneficial for addressing restless leg syndrome. This opens up the possibility of choosing epilepsy treatments that also address sleep issues simultaneously. These different situations provide valuable insights for improved patient care. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) 2023 Congress in Budapest, Hungary.
