EAN 2024 | Latest developments in narcolepsy treatments

Lucie Barateau, MD, PhD, Gui-de-Chauliac Hospital, CHU Montpellier, Montpellier, France, discusses the latest developments in narcolepsy treatments, focusing on the introduction of orexin receptor 2 (OX2R) agonists. These new drugs address the underlying orexin deficiency in narcolepsy type 1, offering promising results for symptoms like cataplexy and excessive daytime sleepiness. While current treatments are symptomatic, the new orexin agonists represent a breakthrough. However, their effectiveness for narcolepsy type 2, which does not involve orexin deficiency, remains uncertain and requires further investigation. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) Annual Meeting 2024 in Helsinki, Finland.
