ESOC 2022 | Sequelae management after thalamic stroke

Ana Verdelho, MD, PhD, University of Lisbon, Santa Maria Hospital, Lisbon, Portugal, discusses post-stroke thalamic syndromes: sequelae which can be highly variable and have a significant impact on daily living, including pain, cognitive decline, and sleep disturbances. Thalamic stroke is a type of lacunar stroke and given the wide-ranging clinical manifestations, it can frequently be misdiagnosed. While some symptoms in the acute phase are resolved quickly, others can be present for many months following a thalamic stroke. Prof. Verdelho comments on current treatment approaches, including questions surrounding the use of dual antiplatelet therapy. Collaborative studies with large patient populations will be important to advance the care of these patients. This interview took place at the ESOC 2022 congress in Lyon, France.
