IHC 2023 | Promoting diversity and addressing barriers in headache research and care

Irene de Boer, MD, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, Netherlands, underscores the importance of addressing the complexities and barriers surrounding diversity in the headache research community. It highlights that problems related to diversity and inclusivity are multifaceted, making it essential to adopt varied solutions tailored to different regions and situations. The International Headache Society’s efforts, such as hosting global Congresses and offering travel grants, serve as steps towards fostering a more inclusive environment. The emphasis is also laid on the value of hybrid Congresses to facilitate broader participation. Dr de Boer stresses that continuous evaluation of diversity initiatives is crucial to ensure progress. Furthermore, it underlines the inherent value of diversity, asserting that diverse teams lead to enhanced excellence. Efforts at the individual level, like seeking mentorship and building networks, coupled with institutional initiatives, can pave the way to achieving these goals.
