AAN 2023 | Pathophysiology of REM sleep behavior disorder

Eric Geil, MD, Miami Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, Miami, FL, discusses REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and its pathophysiology. The international classification of sleep disorders’ classification system for parasomnias includes REM and non-REM parasomnias. RBD is a REM parasomnia characterised by dream enactment behavior. Experts believe that degeneration in the pre-locus coeruleus causes disinhibition of spinal motor neurons during REM sleep, which causes the dream enactment behavior that is seen in patients. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting 2023 in Boston, MA.
