AAN 2023 | Diagnosing RBD: important considerations

Eric Geil, MD, Miami Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, Miami, FL, describes how REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is currently approached in the clinic. RBD is a chronic sleep condition characterized by dream enactment and loss of REM atonia. Patients with RBD have a high risk of developing α-synucleinopathies, such as Parkinson’s disease or dementia with Lewy bodies. Therefore, when an RBD diagnosis is confirmed, clinicians need to consider informing the patient about the increased risk of potentially developing a neurodegenerative disease in the future. However, each patient requires a personalized approach, as some medications or medical conditions can trigger symptoms of RBD. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting 2023 in Boston, MA.
