MDS 2023 | The MDS-NMS: refining the assessment of non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease

Ray Chaudhuri, MD, DSc, FRCP, FEAN, King’s College London, London, UK, discusses the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society Non-motor Rating Scale (MDS-NMS), an updated version of the non-motor symptom scale. The original scale was developed in 2007 and has since been extensively validated across the globe. The MDS-NMS separates various symptoms into different domains, such as depression and apathy, allowing for a more granular assessment of cognitive deficits. Additionally, there is a specific subsection on non-motor fluctuations. This updated scale is now being used in clinical trials, registry studies, and industry compounds, making it a valuable tool for healthcare professionals to assess non-motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson’s disease. This interview took place at the 2023 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Copenhagen, Denmark.
