Winfried Randerath, MD, FCCP, Centre of Sleep Medicine and Respiratory Care, Solingen, Germany, discusses sleep apnea phenotyping, focusing on central sleep apnea. Prof. Randerath first explains that central sleep apnea patients should be categorized into different subgroups, depending on various factors. Prof. Randerath then discusses the effects of hypoxic burden and respiratory drive on patients with central sleep apnea, which must be further investigated to better understand the outcomes of these patients.
