EAN 2023 | New recommendations on MS treatment and holistic patient care

Celia Oreja-Guevara, MD, PhD, University Hospital San Carlos, Madrid, Spain, provides an overview of her recent consensus from the Spanish Society of Neurology regarding multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment and holistic patient care. The consensus addresses how MS therapies have changed over the last decade, emphasizing the importance of treating the disease’s underlying factors right from the start. The consensus recommends initiating treatment with high-efficacy therapies from diagnosis, which is contradictory to previous approaches. Dr Oreja-Guevara highlights this shift from conservative treatment strategies in Spain, which often start with low-efficacy treatments. Furthermore, the consensus recommended improving early detection of disease progression and emphasizes the need for a swift transition to alternative treatments if a patient is not responding well. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) 2023 Congress in Budapest, Hungary.
