AAN 2023 | µVNS: clinical significance in epilepsy

Cornelia Drees, MD, Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, AZ, discusses the potential significance of microburst vagus nerve stimulation (µVNS) therapy in the field of epilepsy treatment. This depends on whether companies decide to pursue µVNS or continue to market standard VNS. The programming of µVNS is similar to that of standard VNS but with more options, meaning that physicians should be able to adapt quickly. µVNS is less invasive than responsive neurostimulation or deep brain stimulation but has similar outcomes in terms of seizure frequency reduction. Even if µVNS does not become available, the study has proven its feasibility and highlighted fMRI as a potential biomarker to show which parts of the brain are participating when we stimulate and aim for seizure reduction. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting 2023 in Boston, MA.
