Celia Oreja-Guevara, MD, PhD, University Hospital San Carlos, Madrid, Spain, discusses relapses in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD), compared to those in multiple sclerosis (MS). NMOSD relapses, though infrequent, are exceptionally severe, often resulting in blindness in one or both eyes after just one episode. Dr Oreja-Guevara emphasizes the importance of not only treating NMOSD relapses but also preventing them. She highlights three different treatments targeting C5, IL-6, and CD19, which offer promising relapse prevention. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) 2023 Congress in Budapest, Hungary.
