EAN 2023 | Biomarkers of chronic inflammation in MS

Celia Oreja-Guevara, MD, PhD, University Hospital San Carlos, Madrid, Spain, discusses the importance of detecting chronic inflammation in multiple sclerosis (MS) and the use of biomarkers for diagnosis. Imaging techniques, such as 3 Tesla MRI with susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) sequence, can detect paramagnetic lesions that indicate active chronic inflammation. Additionally, slowly expanding lesions observed in MRIs can provide insights into disease progression. Fluid biomarkers like neurofilament light chain (NfL) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) can be combined to assess disease progression and acute inflammation. These biomarkers show promise as they can be easily obtained from blood samples, making them accessible for routine clinical use. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) 2023 Congress in Budapest, Hungary.
