MDS 2023 | Emerging therapies for neurodegenerative diseases

Tiago Outeiro, PhD, University Medical Center Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany, discusses emerging therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. At the International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders, one of the plenary sessions focused on therapeutic strategies for the future and explored three relevant therapeutic areas under development. The first topic focuses on viral-mediated delivery of therapies, including the delivery of growth factors and the potential to downregulate specific genes involved in disease progression. The second presentation discussed immune-related therapies and the role of the immune system in diseases like Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. Antibody-based therapies and the regulation of immune cells are highlighted as potential treatment approaches. The third talk centered around emerging therapies closer to clinical application, such as targeting synaptic function molecules and developing tools to correct DNA mutations. Prof. Outeiro emphasizes the optimism and hope for the future of neurodegenerative disease treatment. This interview took place at the 2023 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Copenhagen, Denmark.
